the meaning of 'hometown'

i've always been confused by the word 'hometown'. in Vietnamese, it means usually where your ancestors are from in Vietnam. coming from an immigrant family who's moved a few times around Ontario/Quebec in Canada, i always feel that i have to explain where i was born and where i grew up.. it's particularly confusing when Vietnamese people are asking me. depending on who i talk to, i give a different spiel of where all my grandparents are from. what does 'hometown' mean to you?
